Koa
Koa
This little vintage doll is dressed in traditional Māori attire worn by members of Kapa Haka groups during concerts and cultural events. She wears a Kahu huruhuru (feather cloak), Pari (bodice), and a Tipare (headband). From her waistband hangs two Poi (balls on string), used in rhythmic performance with music and song. Around her waist she wears a Piupiu (flax skirt), and around her neck rests a treasured Pounamu pendant.
The Story of ‘Koa’
‘Koa’ is named after Melissa’s great-aunt Koa, whose name was gifted by a Māori Chief from Waimate. The Chief formed a close friendship with Melissa’s great-grandfather, who lived next door. Out of respect and affection, the Chief named five of his friend’s children: Wanaka, Hinemoa, Rewa, Te Hira, and Koa. Melissa treasures this story of aroha and friendship, and as she prepares to move to Waimate herself, she hopes to learn more about the Chief who played such a meaningful role in her family history.
A Dedication in Watercolour
Melissa hopes the love and respect within this story is reflected in these delicate watercolours, which she dedicates to her great-grandfather and his enduring friendship with his neighbour.
