Hine
This piece is the third in a series of three retro-inspired dolls. This little wahine is dressed in a Korowai (feather cloak) and Tipare (headband), symbols of tradition and cultural pride.
The Story of ‘Hine’
‘Hine’ is named after Melissa’s great-aunt Hinemoa, whose name—like those of her siblings—was gifted by a Māori Chief from Waimate. The Chief shared a close friendship with Melissa’s great-grandfather when they lived as neighbours, and in a gesture of deep aroha and respect, he named five of his children: Wanaka, Hinemoa, Rewa, Te Hira, and Koa. Melissa treasures this story of enduring friendship and hopes, as she herself prepares to move to Waimate, to learn more about the man who became such a meaningful part of her family’s history.
A Dedication in Watercolour
Melissa hopes that the love and respect within this story shine through in these delicate watercolours, which she dedicates to her great-grandfather and the neighbourly bond he shared.
