Te Hira

Te Hira

The Story of ‘Te Hira’
‘Te Hira’ is named after Melissa’s great-uncle Te Hira. According to family history, his name was gifted by a Māori Chief from Waimate, who shared a close friendship with Melissa’s great-grandfather when they lived as neighbours. Out of this bond, the Chief named five of his friend’s children: Wanaka, Hinemoa, Rewa, Te Hira, and Koa. Melissa treasures this story of aroha and respect—how deeply valued the friendship must have been for her great-grandfather to entrust the naming of his children. Now, as Melissa prepares to move to Waimate, she hopes to uncover more about the Chief who played such a meaningful role in her family’s story.

A Dedication in Watercolour
Melissa hopes the spirit of love and respect within this tale is reflected in her watercolours, which she dedicates to her great-grandfather and his friendship with his neighbour.
